New RIM CEO: No ‘Drastic Changes’ Needed

From TechCrunch:

“At the time, the company was growing but still acting as a startup,” said Heins. “But startup processes don’t scale. Every company goes through that phase. I had the opportunity to learn about RIM here. I don’t think that there is a drastic change needed. We are evolving our tactics and processes. I don’t feel that I was held back in any way to do what I needed to do.”

From PCWorld:

At first, Heins will focus on improving the company’s marketing efforts, which include hiring a new chief marketing officer as soon as possible, and the way it develops products.

“We need to be more marketing driven, and we need to be more consumer-oriented because that is where a lot of our growth is coming from,” said Heins.

Double #Facepalm. And this is just Day One.

Jobs, the Budget, the Forestry Commission and the Presidential Race on ‘Arkansas Week’

Arkansas Week on AETN

Tonight

It’s the first edition of AETN’s “Arkansas Week” of the year. Auld lang syne and whatnot!

In this episode, Michael Hibblen of KUAR-FM, Dr. Hal Bass of Ouachita Baptist University, host Steve Barnes and myself discuss today’s better-than-expected December jobs report, this week’s better-than-expected Arkansas revenue report, the Arkansas Forestry Commission’s worse-than-expected financial situation and Mitt Romney’s, well, expected win in New Hampshire.

There’s other stuff too, about how Ron Paul is the top donation-getter in Arkansas, even ahead of Rick “Where Dreams Go to Die” Perry, and what that says about where Arkansas fits in this election cycle (spoiler: It doesn’t!).

So check it out, 8 p.m. tonight on your local AETN affiliate. It’s not like there’s anything else good on TV.

(Or watch here online.)

On HBO GO and Cutting Cable

MG Siegler’s open letter to HBO:

I’d gladly pay you upwards of $19.99 a month for direct access to HBO Go without a cable subscription. Netflix charges $7.99 a month for their streaming service right now, but thanks to your original programming, you’re worth a lot more. But Netflix original programming is coming soon, so your premium buffer won’t last forever. The time to strike is now.

If you could remove your lips from the cable company teet for a minute, you’d find hundreds of thousands — and likely millions — of customers happy to pay a premium for access to HBO Go without the cable requirement right now. That number is only going to grow. And fast.

Man, this is something I can totally get behind. All in all, our cable bill isn’t terrible — $130 a month for a Comcast package that includes Internet access and whatever that channel lineup is that’s a step above local channels only, plus HD. But it could always be lower, particularly given all the little channels we never watch.

Meanwhile, we watch something via Netflix streaming nearly every night of the week.

Siegler wants HBO GO now, and heck, so do I — its back catalog of every episode of “The Sopranos” and “The Wire” is worth the price of admission by itself. But I think we’re fooling ourselves if we think HBO’s going to decouple from the cable guys anytime soon.

Still, the existence of HBO GO is good sign, and it provides the company a quick way out should the cable TV environment suddenly change, say, when a certain Cupertino tech company decides to unveil its rethink of what TV should be. HBO GO is a great app, after all.

Video: A Christmas Wonderland in Sherwood

Add this address – 2008 Covington — to your annual tour of Christmas lights in central Arkansas. In fact, if you’re in Sherwood, you might decide to check out the city display at the old Woody’s Sherwood Forest, then zip over to Covington for the finale. It’s something.

Video: A Big Day at the Big Jingle

Once again, I was proud to be a judge at the Big Jingle Jubilee Holiday Parade in downtown Little Rock. Above, a video snapshot from the Saturday event, shot (and edited!) on the iPhone 4S. You can see more pictures from the event that I took and posted on InArkansas.com’s Facebook page.

Video: WMC’s Sweeps Piece on How its Weatherman Sorta (But Not Really) Got Punched in the Face

Last night, as I tweeted yesterday, NBC affiliate WMC-TV, Channel 5, in Memphis aired an exclusive interview with the Memphis doctor who handled Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ liver transplant. Unfortunately, video of that segment isn’t on WMC’s site today. At least not yet. Bummer, right?

So what video is on WMC’s site? How about this other November sweeps piece, about how their weather guy got punched in the face in the 70s!

Yep, another unbearable segment whether the local newscast lets itself become the story. Here we go:

The story is a tall tale as famous as Brown’s forecasts, and people remember it quite differently. Many Mid-Southerners swear they were watching television when the famous punch happened.

“A man was in a convertible and it rained on him, and he came in and hit him,” Patricia Tucker recalled.

“The story I remember is when somebody threw a Coke in his face,” Memphian Joy Frederick said.

Famous Memphians remember versions of the story as well.

“Dave immediately went on the defensive. He leaped in the air with a flying drop kick,” professional wrestler and WWE commentary Jerry Lawler said.

“I mean, he had two black eyes, his nose was swollen…that’s the day that Dave’s hair turned white,” he laughed.

Uh-huh. That’s the Jerry Lawler, the Andy Kaufman/WWE/MidSouth rasslin’ Jerry Lawler.

The 36-year-old story, presented in a lighthearted manner with whimsical graphics of Brown getting, you know, punched in the face, is undercut by the cold truth behind this Memphis urban legend: the puncher was mentally ill, and Brown hid under a table during the attack. Also, small detail: Brown wasn’t actually punched in the face.

As the man approached Brown, he took a swing, but he did not hit the famous forecaster in the face.

“As he swung kind of a hay maker, he caught me with his forearm, and I went down and went under a table,” Brown said. “Again, not knowing if he was armed and not knowing what he wanted. But he didn’t hurt me. I was not injured – nothing like that.

WMC, leaving it all on the field during November sweeps.

Meanwhile, where’s that Jobs video?

In Which We Give Acxiom Too Much Credit

Acxiom

Acxiom

KATV on the Occupy Little Rock protestors, some whom might be a tad paranoid:

Acxiom, an Arkansas-founded global interactive marketing services company, has recently become a target of protesters because of their involvement in collecting data on individuals and selling it to marketers.

“Do you know about Acxiom?” asked Lansky. “Because they know all about you.”

Their 4th and Ferry encampment is located directly across from Acxiom’s downtown Little Rock offices.

Several participants a day now spent hours at a time in front of Acxiom’s building in protest. Back at the encampment, rumors swirl about the telemarketing giant’s ability to monitor nearby cell phone conversations.

“Acxiom conducts no surveillance whatsoever,” said Acxiom spokesperson Jonathan Portis in an e-mail. “Our security measures are for the protection of our facilities and employees.”

I mean c’mon. This ain’t “The Dark Knight.”

There Is No End to Houston Nutt’s Bullsh*t

Houston Nutt

Houston Nutt

Tre Baker, putting Houston Nutt’s Ole Miss football team in ArkansasSports360.com’s Outhouse. Again. This time, after Nutt suspends key players before facing a horrific beat-down this weekend versus LSU.

A cynic would say something here how suspending your star players right before facing the No. 1 team in the country and then perhaps blaming the loss on their absence is a chicken move. But then again, we already said that a month ago when Nutt suspended four of his players against then-No. 1 Alabama.

Nutt is literally resigned to his fate.

Why has this guy been allowed to finish the season?
