R.E.M. Is Over

After 31 years and 15 studio albums, R.E.M., “the band you grew up with,” has disbanded, according to a statement today on its website.

Some would argue the band’s been done since after New Adventures in Hi-Fi, its last great album — and its last album with drummer Bill Berry. Subsequent albums, as good as they were, never scaled the heights of its influential 80s work, or even its 90s output.

Above, one of my favorite R.E.M. songs, boasting one of my personal favorite misunderstood song lyrics. Yep, “you can’t mail paints by computer design.” Not anymore anyway.
